paused bench

(I believe all benching I'm going to be doing for the foreseeable future is going to be paused. I'll make note of this in each benching log, but I thought I'd just declare that now).

bar x 6
bar x 5
65 x 3
75 x 1
85 x 1
95 x 3
95 x 4
95 x 4
95 x 7

easy as hell today. I am going to bring this bench UP.

strict rowing
bar x 8
75 x 12
75 x 12
75 x 14

DB incline press (single DB weight)
20 x 6
30 x 10
30 x 10
30 x 10

Cable overhead tricep pulls
50 x 20
55 x 15
55 x 13

decline sit-ups
15 x 12
10 x 10
10 x 10
These felt like crap; something in my back has been tweaked since the meet and likes to manifest while I"m setting up for bench or doing dinky little accessory exercises--in other words, it's not bothering me for squatting or pulling, so screw it, we're doing this.

Yesterday's work (today is a rest day)

deadlift

95 x 5
95 x 5
135 x 2
185 x 2
210 x 1
235 x 3
235 x 3
235 x 3
235 x 6

Video of the last set. I was rounder on this than I'd have liked yesterday, but I'll just fix it.

speed pulls

145 x 2
145 x 2
145 x 2
145 x 2
145 x 2
145 x 2
145 x 2
145 x 2

Pull-ups
12, 9, 8
Well, apparently these go to hell after a lot of deadlifting.

facepulls
50 x 14
45 x 15
45 x 10 wtf, sad

I'm trying to think of an adjective to describe it. I'm off to Urban Dictionary; the first term I see shall be used to describe it.

EDIT: Ah, perfect:

Hoodrat Shit

The act of engaging in undesirable or unlawful activities such as stealing, smoking marijuana, and drinking forties on the street.

Ex. Let's get into some hoodrat shit on the way to the bar.

Dad: Where you going kid?

Son: Out with my friends.

Dad: You better not start wildin wit that hoodrat shit or I'll kick your ass.

Get a war cry like that and you'll add 50lb to your total instantly.

squat

bar x 8
bar x 5
95 x 5
120 x 2
135 x 1
145 x 1
150 x 1
150 x 2
150 x 2
150 x 2
150 x 2
150 x 2
150 x 2
150 x 2

box squat
bar x 6
65 x 4
90 x 8
100 x 8
110 x 8

These absolutely sucked. I suck at box squatting so hard; I imagine watching me do these would make for good "that really pathetic lifter in my gym" fodder for whomever.

squat belt walks
45 x 6 trips
70 x 4 trips
70 x 4 trips

quad extensions
60 x 15
60 x 15
60 x 10

standing cable crunches
50 x a fair amount
55 x see above
55 x same, screw it

Today I was in a really surly, awful mood in the gym. I have no idea what happened, but once I started work in one of the cages I was basically a ball of anger--and not in a good way. Right now, my head is filled with all kinds of "not good enough...not doing enough...work harder...flawed...etc. etc." messages. I suppose the upshot to said thoughts is that they make you try your ass off. If what you're doing isn't "good enough," you sure as shit better not do it badly. Because then you're doing something that's not good enough...badly.

I did a press session two day ago and screw it, it's just not going to get logged. More pressing today, and here's the work from yesterday (11/12):

heavy squat

95 x 5
125 x 2
135 x 1
145 x 1

155 x 2
155 x 3
160 x 3
160 x 6

Vid of the last set, with a guy's butt:

stripped
140 x 2
140 x 2
140 x 2

70 x 4
85 x 1
95 x 1
100 x 2
100 x 3
100 x 3
105 x 3

I'm trying not to be embarrassed by my benching. Really, really trying. It'll happen someday.

bar x 8

80 x 10

Also, your benching looks good, and we have a grand total of one lifter ranked in that lift. Guess who's closest to being #2? You are; you're only 5 lbs. away, after all.

I reallllly want to get that 125--thank you. I'm trying danged hard to get it better and better. If I can progress to the point of doing 125 or even 130 (dreaming here) by April I'd be pretty proud of myself, honestly. My theory that I need to keep improving my arch mobility (that this will be key to my bench form) remains.

Nov 18 Squat

mobility work
bar x 8
bar x 8
95 x 4
120 x 2
140 x 2
155 x 2
160 x 2
165 x 2
170 x 3 rep PR yeahhhhh buddy

Got video of the 170 triple but you basically can't see me in it--I'm blocked by a bunch of equipment. You CAN see the bar speed and that wasn't bad. I'm pretty happy with this, more work will be done.

pull-throughs
50 x 15
50 x 15
55 x 12

GHR
15, 15, 15

band adductors
bunch bunch bunch

possibly some other stuff, did this on Sunday and don't remember it that well. Switched my Sunday (off) with my Monday (squatting) because of travel.

Nov 20 [Paused, because that's all I ever do anymore] Bench
ended up at a former Gold's gym in CT for this one.

bar x 5
bar x 5
bar x 5
70 x 3
85 x 1
95 x 1
105 x 1
105 x 2
105 x 2
105 x 3

ultra wide-grip pull-ups
9, 5, 5, 5
I've been interested in moving my grip out basically as far as I can and still be able to perform a pull-up recently; I think I might be ending my stint of that, because I did something that tweaked my shoulder (shoulder? Wtf) on the second set and then proceeded to do two more because I'm an idiot. Probably not a necessary variant. Whatever.

DB incline press (single DB weight)
15 x 7
30 x 11
30 x 10
30 x 10

Cable tricep overhead pushdowns
some weight x 20
some weight +10 x 15
some weight +10 +10 x 15
Don't really remember what the weights were on this cable stack, but whatever, I worked up to what felt like a struggle on each set.

Nov 21 Deadlift
Went to Kyle's old gym for this one. Used a thicker, completely inflexible bar for pulling because it had the better knurling of the bars offered. The thickness of the bar wasn't an issue for my grip at all, but I think I felt the difference in torque in this one versus what I usually work with (also not technically deadlift bars, but somewhat more giving than this monster).

95 x 5
95 x 5
135 x 3
185 x 2
225 x 1
245 x 1
260 x 1
260 x 1
260 x 1
260 x 4

Apparently the collars I were using add up to 3 lb in weight, so I actually did a bunch of sets with 263. The singles were crap, but the AMRAP was pretty solid because I decided anything less than a solid 260 x 4 was not going to be acceptable.

175 x 1
175 x 1
175 x 1
175 x 1
175 x 1
175 x 1
175 x 1
175 x 1
Speedwork went well, played around with starting with my hips somewhat higher.

Facepulls
band x 15
band x 16
band x 16

weighted leg-elevated crunches
45 x 30
45 x 25
45 x 25
bruised the sh*t out of my chest doing these.

95 x 5
125 x 2
135 x 1
145 x 1
160 x 1
170 x 1
170 x 1
170 x 1
170 x 1
170 x 1
170 x 1

Box squat technique work/I suck at box squatting (and that's why I do it)

bar x 8
100 x 6
110 x 6
120 x 6

The squatting I did today was probably a little heavier than I'm noting here because we weighed the bar I used (still at an away gym because of flight havoc, yay travelling near Thanksgiving time) and it came in at over 45. It was probably the same bar I used for pulling--thick, no give, but good knurling. Yah.

Box pistol squats, I suuuuuuuuuuuck at these
7 each leg
6 each leg
5 each leg FML

standing cable crunches
50 x bunch
60 x bunch
60 x bunch

lying leg curls
260ish

105 x 1

wide-grip technique work
75 x 6
75 x 6
75 x 6
Benched at yet another new gym for this session. Told myself I didn't suck at bench and felt really good--well, as good as I ever feel benching--yesterday, so Kyle suggested trying for a paused PR and I was all "hell yeah, I know I can get freaking 125" and I did. Not fantastically pretty, but it would have passed in a meet.

Chin-ups
1 and my head literally went through the ceiling so I switched to pull-ups. It was one of those ceilings with removable cheap-ass panels, thankfully.

Pull-ups
14, 9, 8

Tricep push-ups
21, 14, 12

rear delt flyes

Yeah, so I got microloading plates, can you tell? Rather, Kyle got them for me because he is awesome. Thank you, good sir. I loved getting these in the mail!

three sets of various reps--worked on modifying/making my performance of these stricter.

So, I've been AWOL. I've had periods of being remiss in logging over the past semester, but this one eclipses those, and I feel like I need to at least stick an explanation here before I shut things down again, if only for documentation of timing, events, and circumstances for myself in the future.

About two (possibly a bit over two) weeks ago, I somehow irritated what I believe to be my eighth or ninth rib on my left side. I stupidly decided to roll the area after dealing with annoying pain for about a week and a half of that timespan, and this was possibly one of my Top 10 Crappiest Decisions of 2012. I remember feeling a pop/snap during that stupid rolling session that had me staring into the mirror that happened to be nearby with a horrified "oh, shit" look--and then the next day, everything felt like crap. I spent the next several days trying to rest the rib, do some training, causing the rib to flare up to the point where the pain was at about an 8 on the pain scale, and taking some days off. What happened when in those several days, at this point, is lost, and I don't regret it. I don't want to dwell on those days, they've been ugly and my morale is been pretty much at floor-level. After some days of lighter work and rest (but still some pain in the rib), I went in and did a deadlift max test session in which I pulled 300 lb. That was great, but it had me mincing through even the tiniest movements in pain the next day.

Apparently, the cough I thought little of over the last few days was actually the flu. Apparently, I max-tested my deadlift with both a screwed-up rib and the flu. That said, the flu didn't slam into me in full, identifiable force until the day after I pulled. Coughing and sneezing hurts my rib and feels like it's probably slowing progress towards healing. Ribs take a long time to heal as it is--I had one take weeks a few years ago. I don't know what is going to happen with my training at this point. I prefer not to speculate at this point.

So I handle such things by a/ not really handling them and b/ pretty much getting the f*ck off of message boards and other lifting-centric online media. I will try to be better about this. I have seen some good stuff from people around here when I do check in, and hope to kick my sorry, self-pitying ass into a maturity level that at least rivals that of a 15 year old (as opposed to the Level Seven-Year-Old it currently is stuck at) at some point in the future.
