PostSubject: Picking Out Shoes   Sat Feb 16, 2013 6:29 pm

Hey everyone, I am looking for some shoes to wear while lifting at the gym. I prefer to go barefoot but I do not think that is allowed (?). Ive been browsing around and looking at various things. The most common ones, of course, are Chucks and wrestling shoes.

1-Which do you guys prefer over the other?
2-What are some things I should look for and keep in mind when looking? (things like no heel, low in height, etc)
3-If wresting shoes, what brand do you recommend?

Thanks guys.

Chucks are good for squatting and for benching; some use them for deadlifting, but the issue is that the sole is thicker.

Wrestling shoes are great for deadlifting but not terribly supportive for squatting.

I use my wrasslin' shoes (Asics is fine for a brand) for squatting and deadlifting, and some Oly shoes for benching, since the elevated heel helps my stumpy legs reach the floor.

Lots of types of keds and vans are canvas shoes with really thin soles. I've got a pair of "chukka boot" style keds that are almost like deadlift slippers, the sole is so thin. My problem with them is that I can't get them to lace up tight enough, so I wind up going back to my chucks, which aren't actually ideal for me because of the aforementioned sole thickness and the fact that the toebox is molded in a position that sort of curls up instead of being completely flat on the ground. I personally use oly lifting shoes for squatting because it works for me and feels awesomely stable, but that's a matter of technique and preference. I have the Nike Romaleo 2's. I also use them for benching because having a raised heel is nice for leverage, almost like being able to set up on your tip toes, which isn't allowed in NASA. Also makes it easier to drive through your heels. Also I prefer having a lowtop shoe for benching because in the past I've needed the ankle mobility to get a really good arch.
