Began Rippetoe's SS routine a couple weeks ago:

Squat - 95 (3x5)
Shoulder press - 65 (3x5)
Deadlift - 135 (1x5)
Bench press - 90 (3x5)
Clean - 70 (5x3)
Pull-ups - 2 unassisted

P.S. If I develop an interesting interpretation of proper form, feel welcome to correct me. I love feedback. (Also, I don't wear my glasses at the gym, so I won't recognize you unless you're close by.)

Previous experience (this probably should have been in my first post): I played college tennis, but without having a tennis buddy, or a coach to direct workouts after moving to Iowa, I no longer knew what to do for exercise. I joined Core Fitness on a whim and took their lifting classes for several months. I began to think there was no point in doing a gillion reps of a given exercise. I happily quit. Since then, I flirted with yoga and biking, but wanted something that didn’t require carrying equipment around town. I eventually settled into a typical weight routine with isolation and isometric exercises. The thought of powerlifting had crossed my mind, but a personal trainer friend of mine was really adamant that I not start. I listened, but then met a powerlifter at the rec center months ago and decided to look into it more. After debating (with the irrational part of my brain telling me I might get hurt and be forever in a wheelchair), I ditched my old routine and here I am!

We're happy to have you with us, OP. We're going to try to convince you to come to our training sessions starting in the fall.

And in my experience, just as many sedentary people suffer from debilitating pain as do powerlifters. You might get hurt, yes, but there is risk in all things--if done properly, you'll be healthier as a result of your training.
