I give them credit for training their deadlifts for this meet. That's probably as good as WSBB has ever looked on deadlift. Fuck, I can't remember any multi-ply guys outside of Bolton and maybe Ano pull 900+.

Burley man had a rough last meet: 850-550-800 or something like that. Went three-for-nine. Apparently he just didn't have good consistent training leading up to the meet and wasn't near his best.

Westside has another 400-lb. raw lifter though who competed at the meet. His name is Chris Spegal and he totaled 2425 in knee wraps and predator briefs (raw for bench and deadlift). So, not quite Malan status, but obviously very strong. I don't know his squat or deadlift, but I saw him bench 630 on the stream, and he is definitely better built to deadlift than he is to bench. So, a new Westside challenger emerges.

Hawk will be at RUM but I forget if he's day 1 or 2.  How did he mismanage his training so much if he's being trained by Louie?

Day two. And my guess is that he probably just has been busy and not training. I can't imagine he'd detrain this much if he was training regularly.

(I think that's 835. Not sure.)

(No idea what his butt's doing. It looked cleaner from another angle on the stream, but it looks awful here. Still.)

Can mega mass someday push a 800+ deadlift though? He's going to have to make up a ton of ground on the bench otherwise.

We'll have to see. I like the chances of a guy who's 6'8", 400 lbs., has really long arms and already benches 630, BUT it all depends upon how he develops and if he stays with the sport. Petr Petras looked like he would be the next big thing at one point when he was one torn callus away from the biggest total in history, but he has disappeared. I just don't see anyone totaling 2500 if they're not pulling at least in the mid-800s.

And Malan is scary because he's competed up until now as a 308. What's going to happen if he gets up to 330-340 and can maintain his deadlift? His squat and bench will just continue to climb.

I think it's easy to make a case for either guy in a few years

Malan - Left some on the platform totalling 2425, has spent a lot of time in single ply, and has put some considerable distance between the two

Mega Mass - Definitely has the frame, has only been powerlifting for ~two years, and is absolutely exploding

He can't "catch" Malan because he doesn't use cheater wraps. And he competes in USAPL, and they keep redlighting him for stumbling/racking early. But I think Ray is stronger than Mass and everyone else in the U.S. at SHW right now.

Had he not stumbled on 950, he would have had the biggest unwrapped squat in history, I believe (and the third-biggest squat of all time, period).

It would be interesting to see how much he could get out of a monolift and wraps. As you pointed out, balance/walkout is a legitimate issue

How the fuck do people manage to do nothing but train, like a lot of the guys at Westside?

I'm starting to believe in Mega Mass. How many other people have ever front squatted 800+ lbs.? One?

Watching him walk out/in some of his squats in training you are crossing your fingers hoping someone doesn't die.

Big Chris from Westside. Biggest push/pull in powerlifting right now? It's close between him and Kirill.
